Last night we watched a National Geographic Channel special on chess grandmaster (mistress?) Susan Polgar and now Rachel is all about learning to play chess. It has been something that she has wanted to try but after watching that show last night I think she is serious. So this morning I showed her the basics and let her play the computer for a while. While she still doesn't have a clue as to strategy I know that it will come. And I think we are all in trouble.
You can view the documentary below (thanks google video!). It is quite fascinating, she is remarkable in that she is able to simultaneously play seven games of chess in her head. And of course she always wins...
The show spends a lot of time on memory, the different types of memory, how memories are formed, etc. It is quite interesting. Of course the focus is on Susan's incredible ability to memorize chess formations and keep those organized in her mind. As you will see she doesn't seem to think at all when she makes a move, it is incredible.
